Learning to row

If you are a novice rower and would like to see if rowing is for you Stockholm Roddförening (SRF)  have two beginners courses in April on the following dates and times;

Date Course1 Course2
Tuesday 25th April 1700-1830 1845-2015
Thursday 27th April 1700-1830 1845-2015
Tuesday 2nd May 1700-1830 1845-2015
Thursday 4th May 1700-1830 1845-2015
Tuesday 9th May 1700-1830 1845-2015
Thursday 11th May 1700-1830 1845-2015

We aim to introduce the beginner to the basic aspects of rowing including safety and the equipment in one of our more stable boats to ensure you can enjoy the exhilarating experience of rowing.
The techniques learned are the same that will be needed in all of the boats we have at the club including competition sculls.

You can enjoy rowing simply to keep fit or as a social rower, individually or in a crew, or even compete at regattas attended by the Club.

Places are limited to 15 people for each course. You can send an e mail to This is a mailto link and let us know which course you are interested in. We also have a waiting list in case someone drop out of a course so even if the courses are full there is always a chance a place might become available.
If the water is warm enough the there will also be an opportunity to row in singles and doubles.

Fitness

There are no particular fitness requirements for the beginners course other than the ability to swim at least 100 meters. The club does provide life vests for who would like to use them. Rowing is a sport for all ages and technique is just as important as strength.

What to wear

Training clothes are sufficient. We recommend something warm though as being on the water in April can be a little chilly. The clubhouse has separate men's and women's changing rooms with showers

Where

We meet at the clubhouse which is situated at Lidovägen 22, Djurgården. Bus number 69 from Nybrokajen takes you to within 250 meters of the club and the stop is Djurgårdsbrunn. There is no parking at the boathouse but a nearby carpark is signed posted.

Once you have finished the course the wide open waters of Djurgårdsbrunksviken will be all yours to row on if you decide to become a full member of the club.

After the beginners course, what's next?

Having completed the rowing introduction course we hope you will now want to join our club and take your rowing to the next level, be it recreational rowing, trying out doubles, fours, quads and eights or even competing in regattas.
Our aim is to make rowing fun and accessible to everyone and easy to become an active member of the club.
SRF holds a regular weekly training practice on monday's starting at 1830 for those who would like to train in a group environment or would like to train in one of the larger boats. There will always be someone on hand to answer questions and offer encouragement.

It will also give you a chance to meet members from the other beginners group and find people to row with who share your new found love of this amazing sport.

In both boat houses are posted a list of which boats are suitable for which weight and ability along with a list of which oars belong to individual boats. To make your rowing experience more rewarding we will run though how to choose the best boat suited to what it is you wish to achieve.
